The purpose of this document is to provide you with important additional information not included in the manuals. It is essential that you read this document fully to allow you to ensure optimal performance and reliability of your Toaster system.
System Requirements

The Video Toaster pushes the envelope for desktop video. However, handling uncompressed D1 video places the highest demands on a computer system and not every system will be up to the task. The following system recommendations have been tested to work with the Video Toaster and you should check our Web site (www.newtek.com) for more additional information.
System Recomendations
Motherboard: Acer AX6BC, ABIT BX6, and Intergraph GL2 motherboards.
VGA display card: Diamond Viper V770, Diamond Viper V770 Ultra, Creative 3D Blaster RIVA TNT2, Creative 3D Blaster RIVA TNT2 Ultra, Hercules Dynamite TNT2 Ultra videocards (must have at least 32MB), or Matrox G200/G400.
Audio card: Diamond Monster sound MX300 or Digital Research Technologies DRSOUNDPCI
Disk controller card: Adaptec 2940 ultra wide SCSI controller
Video hard drive: Seagate Cheetah-series SCSI hard drives (two minimum)
Installation Notes
Be sure to backup the contents of your disk drives before installing the Video Toaster hardware and software.
If you have any previous installations of Video Toaster (or FrameFactory), you must uninstall them and reboot before installing this software.
In order to install this software, you must be logged on as Administrator. You do not have to be logged on as administrator to run the software, but you must still have administrative privileges.
Recording Audio
You need to record audio to a hard drive other than the one used for video. As such, you will likely want to record audio to a drive connected to your system IDE controller. If you will be recording to an IDE drive, you need to activate IDE DMA. To do this, do the following:
1. Execute the DMACHECK.EXE program on the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) CD, located in Support\utils\i386\ directory.
2. The program will indicate whether DMA is enabled on either IDE channel. Click on the Enabled button to enable DMA for the desired drive.
3. Reboot your system.
4. Execute the DMACHECK.EXE program again to check that DMA was enabled.
Please note that IDE DMA has been known to have problems if the IDE hard drive is on the same IDE chain as a CDROM drive, because not all CDROM drives are DMA capable.
ToasterVision
This allows you to display the Video Toaster's input or output on your computer's VGA monitor. ToasterVision displays 60 fields per second with proper 2:1 interlace for a very accurate representation of the NTSC or PAL video output. For most accurate results, select "Video Resolution 1:1" from the Settings menu. You can also maximize the window for full screen, scan-doubled video. (requires TNT based VGA card as suggested above)
Make sure your Display Properties has the Refresh Frequency set to 60Hz refresh rate for NTSC or 75Hz for PAL for proper on-screen playback. (To change display refresh frequency, open the Windows Control Panel and click on Display. Go to the Settings tab.)
Use ToasterVision [in] to monitor the Toaster input video. Use ToasterVision [out] to monitor Toaster output video.
ToasterScope
ToasterScope is a real-time vectorscope / waveform monitor. ToasterScope displays the D1 data from either the input or output of the Toaster card. Use the Settings menu to select Vectorscope or Waveform monitors in composite, luminance, chrominance or component video YUV or RGB modes.
This utility is very processor intensive and can cause some single-processor systems to repond sluggishly. To minimize these effects do not run multiple ToasterVision windows or ToasterScope windows.
LightWave VT
The LightWave SuperConfig utility (Programs\Lightwave_Support folder) is also included to help in rebuilding your LightWave config files, if this becomes necessary.

Known Problems
AuraVT is set up by default for NTSC, if you have the dual-standard Video Toaster and want to make PAL the default, you must make a config file that does that. See the Aura manual.
In LightWave VT, you may see some display errors in the preview display (Show Rendering In Progress active); however, this will not affect the final rendered images.
When using in:sync Speed Razor, Direct Draw overlay will not operate correctly on some videocards. Using a normal VGA mode may help, but the screen may not update acceptably.
On some systems, batch capture in Speed Razor has been found to drop a few frames.
Do not use an ISA sound card. This includes some motherboards with built-in audio, which often use ISA support. Check your motherboard manual for details.
If the software ends abnormally, run VT Reset from the Start->Programs->Video Toaster->VT Reset.
